The Master Painters of the Dutch Golden Age: Their Lives and Works in 500 Images

This book is like taking a trip to an excellent art gallery. The book is full of artworks and artist who were well known to me but also some not as well known.

Mostly well written, informative, interesting. A good survey of great paintings and great painters, many not well known. The reproductions are numerous, and non-experts can gain a lot of knowledge. BUT, THERE ARE TWO GLARING ERRORS. First, the text is in a sans serif font, which is very hard on the eyes. While I would be happy to curl up and read for an hour or so, my eyes get very tired after five or ten minutes. Sans serif fonts are very good for headlines, but not for serious text. Second, except for those in the Gallery section of the book, there is no indication of the current location of the paintings. Why was this omitted? Are fewer than half meant to be searched out? If there is a second edition, please fix these errors and make it a great book rather than just a good one.

This book was lovely! The artists and their works were well organized, the reproductions are clear and the history is easy to read and follow.

Such great value compared to other books covering the same topic...bought a couple more as gifts for other devotees of the same artistic period

The illustrations are very well reproduced and the text is highly informative.

The book is of excellent quality, with background information on the period, style and individual painters and paintings. It's a pleasure to read, especially if you are preparing for a museum visit.
