Wow. Compared to the JEKOSEN 7" KITE REEL, which I also have, and which is pictured next to this one in my photos, there is no comparison.The construction of this is very high quality, the bearings seem much stronger than the Jekosen 7”, and it’s super smooth to operate. Yea it’s $70 but totally worth it compared to my other reel which was like $11.I was flying a 25 ft octopus in moderate winds with the 7” Jekosen reel with 70lb Kevlar twist line and it couldn’t handle it. The bearings were binding when it pulled hard and was hard to bring back in until the winds calmed. If the winds didn’t occasionally calm to retrieve bit by bit I would have had to walk it down.Flying it with the Emma reel was like nothing was even attached to it. Not to mention the thumb brake and payout lock on this reel. This reel is slick.I have it pictured wound with 1,000 feet of 300lb Dacron line (2.5mm) and that’s about the max it will take. I wouldn’t want to put more on than that anyways. I might actually take 300 ft or so off because:Con: it’s heavy.It’s kinda heavy on its own but when you wind up 1,000 ft of 300lb Dacron on it, it’s quite heavy. In all fairness the kites I’ll fly with this reel and line will be pulling with a bit of lift so that’ll lessen the downward weight but it was noticeable compared to the 7” Jekosen, for example.You can see the two pictured side by side in my photos as well as what 1,000 ft of 300lb Dacron (2.5mm) looks like fully wound on it.Overall, I definitely recommend. I just bought the support strap for it just now for a little more hands free use / support.Looking at getting the 75 ft Emma Octopus kite to fly with this rig as it doesn’t need a lifter/pilot sled and looks like a lot of fun. That kite might need (or should use) the 500lb 3mm Dacron line, but that’s cheap enough once you get into kites that size.

The media could not be loaded.  I think mine might be defective? The lever housing moves a ton... like a lot a lot. See video... is this correct? Would love to hear from other owners if this is the wat it is supposed to be... with that much torque on it I cannot imagine this is a strong housing... Please advise if you have any experience with theses. Thank you

I agree with the other review that THIS IS A BEAST. Seriously, if you've got any kind of a stiff wind pulling hard on that kite, you need a lot of grip strength to hold this at the right angle to use the thumb brake. I found myself bringing the right hand in to assist with the thumb brake. But then, because the thumb brake doesn't exactly apply a predictably steady friction to slowly let your line out (it's kind of stop-or-go jerky), I just used the winder to let line out more steadily. The ratchet switch is a lifesaver for when both hands just need a break. And the nice thing about it is you can switch the ratchet off, but it won't release until you put your hand back on the winder and give it one click forward. One drawback: that ratchet is loud! I was a little embarrassed when its noise drew the gazes of other park-goers who just wanted to enjoy regular park noises. Overall: excellent design; excellent build quality; not for the small or weak.

order this one evening after drunk some whiskey. $70 for a kite line wheel! wtf??? ... oh, it arrived today and i was not disappointed. it is well engineered and packed with so much care, you can't hurt it if you drop the whole package from 2nd floor. the wheel works very smooth and with clutch to stop the back spinning. like a large fishing wheel. a free release will allow the wheel to fly free. it also come with its own bag and loop for shoulder strip. recently i got into fly bird kites (high aspect ratio kite). it tends to over fly and turn, dive. with this fast wheel, it makes fun to play the kite in sky. like falconry... a lot fun and blast

The media could not be loaded.  I purchased this to go with the 24 feet octopus kite I purchased and I'm glad I did. Easy to assemble one you play with it a little. I purchased the swivel and 150 lb Kevlar line to go with it as well as the shoulder harness which in my opinion is a must. Please be careful when using though because the screw near the hand wheel crank side can cut you because it protrude out some when winding. I got cut my first time using and will be using gloves from here on out. Everyone complimented me on my set up from children to grandparents. This made my kite flying experience easy. Money well spent. No regrets.

Hey! I bought a second kite reel! What more can I say! The only thing better than this kite reel is the service at Emma Kites! At first look and use you may wonder, "Why the expense of the upper ball bearing gimble?" That gimble is absolutely wonderful and allows you to set the kite up for a solely independent self launch and walk facing forward away from the kite spooling the line out behind while holding the real in front of you as you walk forward. "YUM!" What more can I say?It is rather large and heavy, I am involved in hard cardio construction work, athletic, and tip a weight scale North of 200lb. I haven't tried out this reel in my pre-teenaged Grandchildren's hands yet but expect no problems!Oh! I did sand some of the sharp casting parting lines and some of the square edges away with fine sandpaper … It just adds to the joy of use. I do this with all of my work tools and I just enjoy the tactical pleasant feel in my hands... I'm a very tactically connected to every thing I use in my hands!

Everything was going well until a couple months ago, the little roller fairlead fell out of the ring (see pic and compare with the seller's pic). Sad that this happened. Other than that, I liked the unit.

I have a kite that is over 20feet long and I needed a strong reel. This one works great. Way over priced but gets the job done.

I love the quality of this, it’s not going to fall apart like other reels that I have had. It arrived in the mail within a reasonable time, two weeks.

1000〜2000円のものもある中この商品はかなり価格は高い。しかし、他のレビューの評価が高かったのを信じて購入。結果とてもレベルの高いものでした。全体的に作りも良いです。リールは巻くだけで出ていかない逆転防止ラッチと糸を巻いたり送り出したりが自由にできるフリーの2種類が選べます。フリーの時に糸を出していく時も、左手で本体を持ったまま左手の親指だけでブレーキレバーを押して糸を出すスピードを抑制できます(完全に止めたり再度ブレーキを緩めて糸を出すなども思いのままです)。巻取りノブは右手で操作します。手で直径2、3センチの棒(よくタコを買った時についてくるヤツ)にタコ糸を巻く時はすごく大変ですが、この商品で糸を巻くと100メートルぐらいでも瞬殺(1分かからない)です。風が急に弱くなってタコが若干墜落気味に落ちてきても気合いを入れて早く巻けば結構復活します。本体の上についている銀色のラインガイドはそれ自体が360度クルクルよく回り糸が接触するローラーもクルクルよく回るので糸も長持ちするでしょう。釣りのリールのように糸を均等の厚さで巻けるようにラインガイドが自動的に左右に動くような機能はないですが、自分で本体を左右に傾けながら巻き取ればある程度は均等な厚さで糸を巻けます。自分は150メートルくらいしか糸をリールに巻いてませんが500メートル以上は巻けそうです。この商品唯一の欠点はしっかりした作りとトレードオフですが重たいところです。10分くらいやってると手が重くなってきます。まぁタコを上げてるときは楽しいのであまり気にならないのですが…。いちおうショルダーベルトをつけられるリングが1つ付いてるので気になる方はつけたら良いと思います(ショルダーベルトはついてません)。普通に使っていれば一生使えそうな耐久性はありそう。

I really like this kite reel. I was able to wind up all 300M of a quality braided fishing line (0.62mm 150lbs) onto it with plenty more room to spare. It is plenty big for my average to small hand. It seems to be designed to be held by the left hand, unmodified.The ratcheting mechanism works really well and it is very handy to have to stop the line and just hold the kite. The braking mechanism works fine too.It is made of strong plastic material. It feels very solid, and therefore also quite heavy even without any lines.I would highly recommend this to kite enthusiasts.

Man size hands. I LOVE this real in all areas of constuction and handeling. wearth the price : ) : ) !I have 6 different reels. I with I saw this one first.

自分の持っている、2ラインのカイトの糸が、左右それぞれφ20ぐらいの丸棒に巻くようになっていて、とても大変でした。2本をまとめてこの糸巻で巻きとることを考えて、購入しました。実際に巻いてみると、リールの直径が大きく、巻き取りがはるかに楽になりました。本来、この糸巻は凧を上げた状態で、糸を伸ばしたり縮めたりできるようになっていると思いますので、ブレーキ等の機能を活用出来ていないのですが、とても良いものだと思います。他の方のレビューにもありますが、重いとは感じます。しかし、これはブレーキを含め、しっかり設計され、しっかり作られているからだと納得できます。シングルラインの大きめな凧にぴったりだと思います。
