Gathers in the imagination
As part of a unit on Indigenous peoples of the PNW for a first grade class this book was invaluable. It captured the spirit world experience, celebrated Coast Salish art and connected to our science unit on orcas and salmon. It could be used for any age group. A great tie in for studying authors purpose and inference.

Beautiful illustration
Neat story telling a Native tale told with vibrant artistry. Reminds me a little of "Where the Wild Things Are". Not too wordy. Good for 2nd grader.

I can't believe I had never heard of it before - so glad I took a chance and ordered it
I became aware of Storm Boy through some cards in a bookstore. The artwork was so fabulous I had to buy the book. I purchased it originally to give as a Christmas gift to a child, but after receiving it, I am keeping it for myself. The story gives the reader some sense of the mystical aspects of life of the NW coastal native people. Consciousness takes many forms in humans and animals - this is one such story, and it is fascinating. I can't believe I had never heard of it before - so glad I took a chance and ordered it!

Gorgeous
I just bought this book for my 2 year old son. We live in the Pacific Northwest so I bought this book for that connection. He was instantly mesmerized by the book, whispering along wide eyed and talked on and on about the story afterward. It clearly resonated with him. He may not understand all the words but he got the story from the beautiful illustrations. The story is great but the illustration are what elevate the book far beyond other children's books. I highly recommend this book.

A classic, beautiful book
People will be framing the artwork from this book fifty years from now. And it's one of my son's favorite books. Great for reading aloud, one of the books you keep reaching for. A classic story, well told and beautifully rendered with images that are faithful to the actual traditions and styles of the Haida and Tlingit people. So it's not just "mind candy" -- it's an introduction to a culture.

Just right for encouraging independent reading
Paul Owen Lewis is a wonderful children's writer and I can't understand why his books are so hard to get hold of.Such a beautiful book, full of dramatic illustrations that feel very modern despite it not being a new book. A unique story that introduces all sorts of themes - American Indian culture and art, loss and longing for home, ecology and friendship. But none of it is handled in a worthy way - it's exciting and fun to read.I bought this for my 6 year old son who is dyslexic. It was perfect for him. It was grown-up enough that he didn't feel at all patronised, but with beautiful illustrations on each page, short paragraphs and simple clear language it's not a difficult read. What he needs is a book that challenges him emotionally and imaginatively, but doesn't challenge him in terms of reading level. This did exactly that. It's a great one for encouraging independent reading.
