Q: When i fill it with seed, it all just falls out through the open ports. as anyone else had this problem? am i doing something wrong?

I had this problem with another feeder on only one occasion. I realized the tube was upside down. When I flipped over the tube part to fill, the seeds remained inside the tube. I hope that helps.

No stand. The "squirrel proof"gates won't work if the feeder sits on a surface.

Q: Can thistle seed be used in this feeder?

My guess is any seed can be used in this feeder just as long as the seed isn't coated with anything sticky that would gum up the feeder, and the seeds are not too large that birds can't pull them out of the hole to eat. But whether or not a particular bird species will eat thistle seed from this feeder I can't answer.
