Great book for all!!
I teach a 1st/2nd homeschool group, as well as my own kids and this book is great!! I love that it shows a ton of examples. I've used many of the picture books she suggests, along with their activities, and the kids were able to clearly see different ways of writing and different traits that go into good writing. Yay! You won't be disappointed with this book. Great for classroom use, or at home!!

This book changed my whole attitude toward teaching writing to ...
This book changed my whole attitude toward teaching writing to 2nd graders! A must-read for every teacher and parent--it demonstrates how to assess even scribbles of beginner writers and encourage them to develop skills and creativity. I am using the Six Traits to develop a writing program for a K-12 school!

Strong resource for instructional recommendations, assessment tools, and samples of student writing
This is a resource I have returned to again and again. The strengths of this book are that there are not only suggestions for teaching, but there are solid resources for assessing and lots of student examples to consider. I wish she'd write on just for informational or just for opinion in k-2.

Buy a hard copy, not an e-book
This is an excellent resource for primary teachers. It has a thorough explanation of the 6+1 writing traits, research to back it up, classroom activities to help students develop writing skills, and writing samples to help the teacher evaluate student writing. I highly recommend the book, but PLEASE do not purchase the digital version. The text will say, "Look at the chart on page 245" but your device will not show page numbers, only "location," and I found it impossible to locate referenced items. Also, on some pages text boxes or sidebars were superimposed over text, making it difficult if not impossible to read the page. Additionally, there were links that said, "Click here to download the PDF" but they took me to a "This page could not be found" page, and the Scholastic site itself provided no help. Buy the hard copy and I think you'll be happy with this purchase.

I love this book
I love this book! I bought the Kindle version so that I could highlight and find things easier. I also got tired of moving from district to district, not knowing if they would have this book in the classroom.

Poor electronic version of book
The content of this book is very helpful to guide instruction for better student writing practices. This was a required book for a college literacy writing course and was excited to find an electronic version as apposed to carrying around more weight in my backpack. Unfortunately, that excitement died when I couldn't access the same information as fellow classmates who had hard copies of the book. The reason I gave the book 3 stars is not for the content, but rather the online version had quite a few errors (not showing correct examples referenced, unable to access all the rubrics for the traits and the pages in the ebook do not align with the hard copy - it shows 4170 pages).Manufacturer needs to fix Kindle version of this book for it to be a more effective teaching tool.
