So Much Fun For Kids and Adults
The Thames & Kosmos SolarBots: 8-in-1 Solar Robot STEM Experiment Kit is one of the best STEM building sets I have purchased. Not only can kids (and adults) follow the easy to read and understand building instructions, but they can learn about how solar power works, so they have a better understanding. These are fun solarbots to build and watch as they work in the bright sunlight or under a higher wattage light bulb. The only negative thing I can say about this kit is that you can only build one solarbot at a time, and then it has to be deconstructed to build the next and the next. I would like a kit where ALL of the solarbots can be built at the same time, so disassembly isn't necessary. Excellent for kids and adults, or kids and adults working side-by-side.

Great engineering present
Got this as a present for my son last Christmas and it is the only present that he still uses almost a year later. So many different options to build and can be built over and over

Works well and fast
Built a bit alongside my 5 year old. Pieces were a bit difficult to break off. Be careful not to break the parts when removing. Bot went together well, instructions were easy to follow, bot went fast in the sun.

Solar bots
My grandson enjoyed building and playing with these bots.

Solar power inefficiency
As olar vehicle was VERY small. Solar panel does not maintain enough energy to motorize the vehicle.

Very finicky gear box
I rarely write reviews, but feel compelled to add to the information on this product. Like many of the reviews here (that I'll admit I didn't read before buying), we struggled with getting the gear box to work once we added the top of the compartment. Everything would be working well and then grind to a literal halt when the lid was attached or anything was slightly jostled. My husband and I are not new to assembling STEM kits with our kids and we went through this process over and over trying to understand what the disconnect was. At once point, we were able to fasten the the compartment while the gears continued to turn, but it was no longer working by the time we assembled the robot around it. Luckily, my son still thinks the external interlocking pieces and gears are cool and is enjoying creating the different robots even though we can't get the gear box to work inside them, so two stars for that and showing him how the solar panel made the gears turn, at least briefly. As others have noted, cutting and trimming the plastic pieces is labor intensive, but not so bad with clippers as advised in the instructions. A 6 year old can't do this solo, parent participation is very heavy at that age.

Too many pieces to punch out
This has sat in the box for a week because my son doesn't want to bother punching out the 100+ plastic pieces from the four mold frames and I don't blame him. They are very difficult and painful to punch out. It will probably take me an hour to punch them all out. Super annoying, would not have bought if I realized this. Can't yet report on how well the kit works. We'll see if we even get there.
