Just Last Night

I wasn’t sure about this initially but by the halfway point I was hooked. Ended up reading late into the night. Really surprising ending too. But it all works. Highly recommend even though I suspect I am much older than her targeted demographic

My favourite author, the book is sweet and an easy comforting read. So perfect. Exactly what i wanted - she always delivers

I hope I am not giving anything away from this review. I just love this so much, I want to go on and on. 😅I first listened to this on audiobook but going into 20% of it, I knew I had to read it, to fully experience it..Susie, Eve, Ed and Justin are friends since they were young and have been inseparable since then. This is made a little complicated by the fact that Eve has been in love with Ed for years, and has been holding on to her what ifs. A sudden tragedy happened that opened to a can of worms..Most of the time, when I read books, there is empathy for the characters although the feelings are there. This one is a punch in the gut, I found myself relating to parts of the plot..There are so many parts of the book that had me stop and make sure I annotate because the quotes are so true for me..For friendship, “ There’s something exceptional about friendships with friends you’ve known since you were young. They know all the versions of you.” This made me reflect. The longest friendship I have right now is the group of friends I had since I was in highschool. This applied to only a few of them, still, it’s true..Also this one - “ My conclusion is this: there’s no rule that says the unavailable person you waste your life being in love with has to be the greatest human you ever met.” The feels, my goodness. There are a lot more, but it would reveal how hung up I am. 🤣.I love Eve, she has been through a lot, along with her friends, but she found herself and stood up for herself after everything that happened..The topic of loss and grief is here, but I love that this was dealt with on a fair amount of time. Not rushed nor prolonged. Having experienced it myself in the past, I found it authentic and accurate. That’s also why I relate to this book so much..I haven’t read any books by Mhairi McFarlane, this is the first - and I love her writing! For me, it’s poetic and lyrical and so so funny! Eve’s lines are so funny and witty that I read them again just to experience the hilarity of it. Absolutely amazing..I would rate this more than five stars, to be honest. ❤️

I highlighted so many on my kindle. As some of you know I recently lost my mom so the grief parts of this story really hit home. The things going through the character’s mind were all things I have felt, currently feel, and know I will feel. It was so therapeutic for me to see those things written down by someone else.Even having an ARC I still went out and bought a physical copy. That’s how much I recommend this story being put out into the world. Not a page turner but a very engaging story. Makes you really want to make sure you don't take a minute for granted!
