Educational in more than just photography.

Art Wolfe is one of my favorite photographers. I’ve always been drawn to and identified with his artful approach to photography and composition. He loves shooting patterns and details. This educational photo book is a nice collection of Wolfe’s style and subject matter that he’s captured throughout his 40+ years of photographing the far ends of the earth. It is chronologically divided into four sections of Art’s career thus far: 1980’s, 1990’s, 2000’s and 2010’s.The 2000’s section begins his journey into digital photography, which the images start to look more like what we’re used to seeing from today’s technology. The 2010’s section was my favorite of the whole book, personally. Each spread has a nature fact related to the image, “The nature of the photo” and an applicable “Photo tip” as well. In addition, Art usually mentions that tip in the paragraph where he explains the experience he had while capturing the image in its location. Most images are horizontal in orientation and only fill half of one page, but are still large enough to explore. A few images are vertical and take up a full page. You’ll find a few full page spreads as well.If you read every paragraph in this book as I did, you’ll end up learning things about animals and cultures that you didn’t know or were even expecting. So, it’s educational in more than just photography.

Terrific content, hurt a bit by the book's attributes

Other reviews have addressed the content very well, and I totally agree. The photos are superb and both authors' comments are enlightening and helpful for photographers wanting to better themselves, for travelers looking for new destinations, and for people looking for a downright well-written, enjoyable book to read. While many of the images have been published previously, this book's chronological order adds a nice context, especially since both the camera and (when appropriate) film type are included for almost all images. It's nice to see how Wolfe's imagery has evolved over time, and also to see some of the wonderful work he created "way back" in film days. It really proves how important the image creator is, as opposed to "just the gear".My gripes are with the book itself. The small sans serif type face and small images feel like the book was intended to be reproduced in a larger format and was downsized for publication. I like hardcover books, but I fear that this one's binding will warp over time. Indeed, it's already started to bend and I've only had it a day. Since the text generally doesn't cover the page and the designer seems to have been fine with smallish images, one might wonder why a larger type face couldn't have been used. The binding's fine—it's great that I don't have to fight the pages to keep them open. But gosh—it's really a disservice to the images to be so small. I'm glad I have three large-size books by Wolfe where his images and text can really be appreciated.
