It CAN be played without the cell phone app, but the app makes it a riot!You can set the app for a milder or wilder experience, whether you have a cautious or thrill-seeking group, which is nice.The first-time set up is a little involved, but they provide a QR code to an instructional video (which we cast to the tv) that was very easy to follow. Game play is 30-40 minutes, but allow about that much time for set-up and instructions the first time around.The box and board and play pieces are extremely thick and durable, and the monster art is fantastic!.Instructions are easy and fun to follow once you get started.The colors of the playing pieces and the board can camouflage each other a bit, so plan on decent light.It will call for some moving around at times, too, so plan for the use of at least a whole room.Can't recommend it enough!

This is a super fun game!! Players need their own phone (no sharing phones). A little dizzying (for us oldies who's equilibrium have disappointedly downgraded with age who are also bitter they can no longer ride roller coasters without getting car sick and hate that Universal Studios got lazy and made rides with more video than actual RIDING. Ya know what I mean!). It's a different play every time. Also...as fun as it is to WIN, let your kid win and know that I know you're still a winner.

Great quality and fun idea. Can me kinda annoying since you have to use your phone most the time. You can do it without but definitely not as fun. Other than that it is great.

1. I can’t say enough about the quality and the artwork that this game has. I’ve never seen it’s equal.The artists who worked on this project must have been graphic scholars. The game is BEAUTIFUL .(I’m a graphic designer too)2. The app is genius in that it makes the characters come to life and jump off the board when viewed from you phone or iPad (How ever they stay connected to the board and don’t sit in your living room to catch!3. I tried many times to understand the directions. Got stuck on where to go after I was in one room.4. I felt there were too many steps and cards to collect for,a kid to play it. The secondary dice I felt were unnecessary. There’s an easier way to get the ghost chase going.Personally my granddaughters don’t like to get scared so it didn’t work for me. But if they did I was going to make up some simple rules to play it just to enjoy the basics and watch the ghosts pop up and laugh.My advise to the makers is to maybe revise the games’complication and make it simple. Like players collect the tools grab the ghost and go on. Eliminate all the alternative cards and options.Expensive to revise. Ya! But with the right revisions I think you’ll find these will sell like hot cakes. And have all 5 star reviews. It’s ingenious! Even the box must have cost millions to produce. What a masterpiece!

I’m shocked at the good reviews my 11 year old daughter and myself tried to set it up, watched the videos and my husband is listening to us and asked, does anyone even understand this because it seems to have way too many steps. Both my daughter & I agreed that this game is confusing with so many steps to play and figure out. We made a mutual agreement to just throw the game away.
